Emission targets notified for Iron Steel units under CCTS

MoEFCC issues a revised draft notification setting greenhouse gas emission intensity targets for 255 iron and steel units under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023.

On 26 June 2026 (made public 2 July), the MoEFCC issued a revised draft notification setting greenhouse gas emission intensity (GEI) targets for 255 iron and steel units under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023. It amends the Greenhouse Gases Emission Intensity Target Rules, 2025, under Sections 3, 6 and 25 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. A 60-day window for objections is open.

Majors including JSW Steel, Tata Steel, SAIL and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel, plus sponge iron, alloy and secondary producers across ten states. Baseline year is 2023-24; targets are set in tCO₂e per tonne of product for compliance years 2025-26 and 2026-27.
