Where international climate law reaches Indian business

International climate law increasingly regulates Indian business from the outside in. Sell coffee, leather, wood or rubber products into Europe, and the EU Deforestation Regulation demands geolocation-level traceability from 30 December 2026. Market a "carbon-neutral" product there, and from 27 September 2026 the EmpCo Directive prohibits the inadequately substantiated environmental claim, and is stricter line than India's own greenwashing rules, so one claim set must survive two rulebooks. Supply a CSRD-reporting customer, and its value-chain disclosures arrive as your questionnaires, codes of conduct and audit clauses. Indian aviation faces its own version: CORSIA's mandatory phase begins in 2027 and India's first binding compliance cycle, having sat out the voluntary phases, alongside India's new SAF blending mandate for international flights and the EU's ReFuelEU requirements at European airports. And value moves the other way too: Indian carbon projects can transfer mitigation outcomes to international buyers under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, where authorisation, corresponding adjustments and contract architecture decide whether that value survives the journey.
