Do you use words like "eco-friendly", "green", "sustainable", "natural", "pure" or "planet-positive" without explaining what exactly you mean?
Are any of your environmental claims not backed by credible certification, reliable scientific evidence, or verifiable internal data?
Is the supporting data or methodology behind a claim unavailable or hard for a consumer to access (e.g. no QR code, link, or disclosure)?
Do you make comparative claims (e.g. "greener than", "lower emissions than") without disclosing the verifiable data behind the comparison?
Do you present a future or aspirational goal (e.g. "net-zero by 2040", "carbon neutral") as if it were a current, achieved fact?
Does a claim highlight one favourable attribute while staying silent on a significant negative environmental impact of the same product?
Do you use imagery, logos, leaves, or symbols that imply an endorsement or certification you don't actually hold?
Beyond these seven. A misleading environmental claim can also trigger general liability under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and for listed companies, exposure around BRSR and ESG-labelled debt disclosures. These seven checks are a starting screen, not a full clearance.
A starting map based on published thresholds, not legal advice, and it does not cover every obligation or exception. Dates and thresholds should be re-verified before you rely on them.
