BRICS Reaffirms Paris Agreement Goals

At the New Delhi summit (September 12–13, 2026), BRICS leaders including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members such as the UAE and Iran resolved to remain firmly committed to the Paris Agreement. The bloc emphasized collective action on mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and pledged stronger support for developing nations.

A key focus was the financial burden on poorer countries. Leaders highlighted that unsustainable debt levels hinder climate investments and called for international cooperation on debt relief and predictable climate finance. The summit also saw BRICS nations oppose unilateral measures such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), arguing that such trade barriers undermine global cooperation and disproportionately affect developing economies.

In this way, BRICS positioned itself as climate committed, yet equity focused, rejecting unilateral trade barriers and pressing for stronger aid to developing economies.
