India Initiates National Sustainability Certification Framework for Exports

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has initiated the development of a national sustainability certification framework for exports and has invited inputs from export-oriented industries to identify products that may require sustainability certification. Consultations are also underway on certification methodologies, data metrics, and verification mechanisms.

The initiative comes amid increasing sustainability related requirements in key export markets. Indian exporters are required to navigate regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), both of which place greater emphasis on sustainability reporting, traceability and supply chain transparency.
